Meet the team - Layla Drewell

Layla Drewell joined the Gibbons team as Finance Manager in 2013. We took five minutes to quiz Layla about this busy role as well as discovering some of her favourite things.

When did you first become interested in finance?

I left education after ‘A’ levels not really knowing what to do next other than that I wanted to work and earn some money! I enjoyed art but couldn’t see a career in it for myself so aside from that, maths was my strongest subject and I thought the closest profession to try would be accountancy. I landed myself a job as a trainee accountant in an accountancy practice.

What does your job involve?

I look after all finance-related tasks and reporting for Gibbons Group, from sales and purchases through to employees’ and statutory reports and returns. I’m also responsible for ensuring that income and expenditures are all correctly reported and accounted for and deadlines are met.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the office?

Say good morning and get a cup of tea! Then I check the bank accounts for the day.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

The variety and volume of work in the role. I also enjoy having an insight into projects with the people running them, especially the cost and margins being made.

How does working at Gibbons differ from your other roles in finance?

My previous roles have been for PLCs, so the change to a family-run firm has been an adjustment in a number of ways. However, it’s great to feel part of a team working for the same goals rather than one of a number that have to firefight each other for what’s needed. I’ve also previously managed a number of staff, so it’s fantastic to be able to get in and get on with my day rather than deal with everyone else’s work.

What’s your favourite album?

Sam’s Town by The Killers or anything by Robbie Williams.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Recently it’s been salted caramel Haagen-Dazs. I’m using being pregnant as an excuse for the amount of it I’m eating, though it’s a new discovery my waistline won’t thank me for!

What’s your favourite place in the world?

Sydney, Australia.

Who would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with?

My easy answer to this one is definitely Robbie Williams, but after a few days I would probably want my husband and daughter with me.

What’s your favourite TV programme?

Any crime or detective series, and I also love MasterChef.

Layla is just one of the many friendly faces our clients deal with here at Gibbons, so for any enquiries give us a call on 01621 868138 or email info@gibbonsgroup.co.uk and we’ll be happy to help.
