Variable-speed drives help the NHS save money

The NHS spends £400 million each year on energy and its CO2 output has almost doubled in the last 25 years. Therefore, UK hospitals are looking at ways to lower their environmental impact and significantly cut costs, with ABB on hand to provide a solution. At the Healthcare Estates Event (7th – 8th October 2014) in Manchester, ABB will present its ideas, which, if implemented, could transform NHS funds.

Hospitals and other healthcare buildings rely on the quality of their heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the welfare of their patients and staff. Electric motors driving fans and pumps within HVAC systems are the largest consumers of energy, which is why installing variable-speed drives in hospitals offers significant savings.

VSDs provide electric motor control which allows HVAC systems to run below full capacity whilst consuming less power. It’s estimated that hospitals currently using electric motors that aren’t speed controlled could cut their running costs by as much as 60% by installing VSDs. Payback can be achieved in as little as a year, after which the NHS could devote the money saved towards improving facilities and providing even better care to its patients.

Other benefits of VSDs in hospital HVAC systems include:

  • Clean air circulation through critical areas
  • Greater control over temperature
  • Enhanced Capital Allowance available
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Easily installed into an existing system.

It isn’t just the NHS that could be saving money, though. By incorporating variable-speed drives into your industry or process, you could vastly lower your energy consumption - saving you money whilst reducing your carbon footprint.
