EU MEPS: Why you may not have to replace your electric motors

As the latest phase of the European minimum energy performance standard (EU MEPS) for electric motors draws ever closer, it’s worth remembering that not all motors will need to be replaced or decommissioned.

The new legislation, to be introduced from 1 January 2015, states that all new 7.5 – 375kW electric motors placed on the European market must be rated at IE3 efficiency, or IE2 if connected to a variable-speed drive.

This means that current stocks of IE2 motors can still be used, but new IE2 motors for existing or new applications must be paired with a variable-speed drive.

If you’re not convinced about the energy savings available via variable-speed drives, there’s no better time to install ABB’s handy smartphone app. The Energy Calculator app demonstrates the amount of energy, CO2 and money that you could save by using a VSD in your application and is available for Apple and BlackBerry devices here.

Gibbons’ position as a founder member of ABB’s Authorised Value Provider programme means we have access to a global network of ABB products and expertise. We have ABB drives and electric motors in stock for immediate dispatch, with next-day UK and Europe mainland delivery available.
