What is a synchronous motor?

A synchronous electric motor is an AC motor which has a shaft speed corresponding exactly with the current frequency. The rotor poles are magnetically locked with the stator poles, meaning the motor has zero slip and is extremely efficient, even under partial load. The speed of a synchronous motor is determined by how many pairs of poles it has.

Synchronous motors are used in applications where precise constant speed is required, such as pumps, fans and conveyors. As an Authorized Value Provider, Gibbons is approved to supply ABB SynRM motor-drive packages, which combine outstanding synchronous motor performance with the precision control of an ABB drive.
