3 tips for effective gearbox maintenance

Gearboxes are essential pieces of equipment in many industries including food and beverage, mining and paper. Gearbox failure can lead to costly unplanned downtime, so it’s vital to carry out regular maintenance. Here are three of the most important things to look out for:

Vibration analysis

It can be difficult to spot gearbox vibration problems when the equipment is operating in a noisy environment. Routine gearbox vibration analysis will reveal changes in the performance of internal components such as bearings and gears.

Wear and tear

For a visual examination of internal gears, inspection covers can be removed or an endoscope used. Common signs of gear wear include misalignment, pitting and spalling. If you spot evidence of gear wear then bearings may need to be replaced or laser alignment carried out.

Shaft seals

Inspect the input and output shaft of your gearbox for oil leaks, the presence of which indicates that the seals have failed. Not only does this mean lubrication can be lost, it also allows dust and water to contaminate the internal components.
