Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions: Beware of biofilm in your AHUs!

Here at Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions, we supply and install the CoilCare® HVAC surface disinfection system in partnership with BioZone Scientific International. This ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) treatment eradicates existing biofilm on the surfaces of cooling coils and drain pans within the air handling unit (AHU) of an HVAC system while preventing new biofilm building up.

So what exactly is biofilm, and what danger does it pose?

Biofilm is a sticky mixture of dust, microbes, mould and other contaminants that forms in a moist environment such as an AHU. Biofilm lowers the efficiency of the AHU’s cooling coil by reducing thermal conductivity and airflow.

As a direct result of biofilm accumulation, there is a pressure drop that means fans and chillers have to use more energy to achieve the set point temperature. Energy consumption increases in proportion to the thickness of the biofilm, with a 300 micron biofilm resulting in over 10% increase in electricity usage. In some cases, coils can become so clogged that pressure is halved and energy consumption rises by up to 30%.

Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions install the innovative CoilCare® disinfection system within air handling units (AHUs) across the industrial and commercial sectors. The flexible system is suitable for all AHUs fitted with cooling coils and can be installed in just a few hours by our engineers.
