What is a star delta motor?

There are various methods of starting an electric motor, one of which is known as star delta. Here we explain what’s unique about a star delta motor.

An electric motor’s windings can be connected in either ‘star’ (Y) or ‘delta’ (Δ). During start-up, the windings are configured in ‘star’ and then switched to ‘delta’ once the motor reaches normal speed, similar to a vehicle changing gear.

The star delta method limits the current to the motor during start-up – cutting the starting power demand by around 67% – with the aim being to reduce shock load. Star delta is therefore used in larger motors to allow longer start-up time and reduce what would otherwise be a massive starting current.
