Why does my pump work intermittently?

Intermittent operation is a common pump problem, but what’s the cause of it?

Many water pumps are used in tanks or other containers for maintaining a steady level of liquid, filling or draining it as required. This repetitive powering up and down gradually reduces the life of the motor controller and pump assembly, meaning the pump will be more susceptible to intermittent operation.

Sporadic running may also indicate your pump is oversized. An oversized pump generates high friction losses because it forces liquid through the pipes at a greater rate than it needs to. As these problems worsen, the pump will begin to operate intermittently before failing altogether.

If you’re concerned about your pump’s performance, give Gibbons a call on 01621 868138 or email info@gibbonsgroup.co.uk. One of our friendly team will be happy to help you get to the root of the problem and advise the best course of action.
