ABB motor range solves water industry specification problems

The electrical and mechanical requirements for equipment used in the UK water industry are laid out in the Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification for low-voltage AC electric motors (WIMES 3.03 issue 6).

Previously, end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had trouble matching motors to specific water industry regulations, but ABB has now produced a range of WIMES-rated motors to make life easier.

The new motors are designed to offer greater protection against the demanding conditions found in the water and wastewater industry, with features including:

  • Stainless steel nameplates
  • Specialist seals
  • Anti-corrosion surface treatment
  • PTC thermistors to protect against overheating
  • Cooling fans optimised for low noise levels
  • Steel fan cover to protect against impact damage
  • Heating elements to prevent condensation

These motors are available in cast iron frame sizes (80-450) and aluminium frame sizes (80-180), rated from 0.75 to 1,000 kW. The totally-enclosed fan-cooled motors are rated at IE3 premium efficiency and IE4 super premium efficiency in accordance with EU MEPS legislation. There’s also a new range of medium-voltage motors (200-2,000kW) suited to the water industry in frame sizes 355 to 560.

We have ABB electric motors available for immediate dispatch from stock, with next-day UK and Europe mainland delivery available.
