How can we be certain about indoor air quality?

An article on wearable technology from International Business Times caught our eye recently. The piece was about a new gadget called the Enviro-Tracker, which is “a personalised air-quality monitor” developed by Tzoa, a recently-formed American company.

The clever device is a tiny monitor that can be attached to clothing and measures toxic particulate matter in the air. This information is then uploaded via a smartphone to a crowdsourced map that allows other users to determine which parts of their city are the most polluted before they travel.

The article also raises a very important issue: what do we really know about outdoor air quality? This then naturally leads to the concern that if polluted outdoor air is being drawn into HVAC systems supplying offices, hospitals, schools and other occupied spaces, how can we be certain about the quality of indoor air?

HVAC systems rely on suitable filtration along with regular cleaning and maintenance in order to remove contaminants and protect the health and wellbeing of building occupants. One solution to the problem of HVAC cleanliness is ultraviolet C (UVC) light, which, when applied to the surface of an air-handling unit, will virtually eliminate viruses, bacteria, mould and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

CoilCare® is an innovative HVAC disinfection systems from Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions which applies the power of UVC light to an air-handling unit’s cooling coil. This state-of-the-art system removes over 99% of microbial contaminants growing on HVAC surfaces, improving the health and wellbeing of building occupants while enhancing energy efficiency and extending AHU service life.

The flexible CoilCare® system can be installed into HVAC systems serving healthcare facilities, education buildings, aquariums, food processing areas, swimming pools and many more occupied spaces. Users can enjoy energy savings of up to 25%, with an average payback period of just 24 months.
