3 things to consider when selecting a pump for salt water applications

The harsh marine environment brings its own unique demands when it comes to electro-mechanical equipment, so here are a few things to consider when choosing a pump for seawater use or other salt water applications.

Horsepower load

Seawater has a specific gravity of 1.03, so the pump will need to have a slightly higher horsepower load than one pumping fresh water.

Pump speed

Operating at low rpm is recommended when working with seawater, plus it also helps to reduce the risk of cavitation.

Corrosion resistance

A pump to be used for salt water will probably require corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel. Sea air also contains salt, so an epoxy coating can be applied to further guard against corrosion.
