3 ways to extend the life of your industrial gearbox

In order to get the longest and most efficient service from your gearbox, it’s important to carry out routine checks and maintenance. Whether it’s used in the mining, paper or milling sector, keep your industrial gearbox ticking over smoothly with these three quick tips.

Keep it clean

In our experience, gearboxes often operate in hot, dirty and dusty environments. In many cases this is simply the nature of the industry and not easily avoidable, so it’s important to regularly remove dust and debris which can cause overheating or contamination.

The harsh operating environment of many gearboxes puts strain on all components, including lubricant. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for lubrication type, grade and quantity and carry out regular replacement to guard against contamination.

Check for common signs of overheating, which include discolouration of external paintwork or dark oil visible in the sight glass. Gearbox temperature should be monitored and recorded as part of routine maintenance in order to identify sudden changes.

Constraints of time and personnel can make carrying out maintenance in-house extremely challenging, so it’s wise to consider a transmission systems service package from industry experts Gibbons. We can perform all aspects of gearbox maintenance at a time that suits you, minimising disruption to your business. Call Matthew Gibbons on 07970 676272 or email and leave everything to us.
