How often should you check electric motor shaft alignment?

Electric motor-powered applications rely on extremely accurate alignment between the motor’s rotor and the shaft of the equipment being driven. Poor alignment causes excessive friction and vibration, leading to inefficiency, premature wear of bearings and increased maintenance costs, so it’s important to make periodic checks.

We’re often asked how often motor shaft alignment should be inspected; ABB motor engineers recommend it’s carried out every 2,000 hours which may be anywhere from three to six months’ operation and will differ between applications.
