Are your AHUs ready for new EU legislation?

As of January 1st 2016, all air handling units (AHUs) installed in the European Union must comply with Lot 6 of the Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive. The ErP Directive was introduced in 2009 and provides legislation for energy-related products in the European Union, with Lot 6 concerning minimum performance levels for ventilation units.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) accounts for around 15 per cent of the EU’s total energy consumption, so there is considerable potential for the reduction of carbon emissions.

One of the most important aspects of the ErP Directive is that all non-residential ventilation units (NRVUs) must include adjustable-speed control such as a variable-speed drive. These devices allow the user to optimise their AHU’s performance via electric motor speed control, keeping energy consumption to a minimum.
