What is LPCB certification and how does it affect pump specifiers?

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is a worldwide independent regulatory scheme for fire and security products, including alarms, glazing and pumps. The LPCB is an expert third party providing certification for BRE (Building Research Establishment), an organisation offering independent consultancy, research, testing and training.

Once a product been approved, a certificate is issued and a listing in the LPCB’s ‘Red Book’ is granted. The ‘Red Book’ (officially known as the LPCB List of Approved Fire & Security Products and Services) is a reference guide for specifiers, regulators, designers and end users.

In fire safety, pumps play a vital role in feeding automatic sprinkler systems. Since the late 1980s, LPCB approval has benefited the specifiers of such pumps in the following ways:

  • Specifying LPCB-approved products demonstrates care and due-diligence, helping to promote professionalism and protect against potential allegations of negligence.
  • By guaranteeing that their approved products conform every time, the LPCB helps specifiers avoid wasting money on inadequate equipment.
  • The Red Book Live product and service search facility saves valuable time.

LPCB approval is not only for new equipment – it can also be applied retrospectively to an existing installation, subject to “a full design review and site inspection.”
