Consultants can’t keep up with variable-speed drive technology

Variable-speed drive technology is advancing at such a rate that building services consultants are struggling to keep up with it in their specifications, according to a recent Energy in Buildings & Industry report.

The EiBI article (‘Missing the benefits’ – May 2016) says that the pace of technological change in VSD-related products such as electric motors is compounding the problem, despite a warning almost a decade ago from automation company ABB about consultants potentially using outdated specifications.

Here are a few striking statistics from the article:

  • During the last 15 years, the physical size of VSDs has decreased by as much as 80 per cent
  • The number of components used in drives is 60-70 per cent lower than in 2001
  • The mean time between failures (MTBF) of VSDs is now five times what it was at the turn of the new millennium
  • Drives’ MTBF now stands at better than one in 50 years

Here at Gibbons we’ve got our finger on the pulse when it comes to advancements in technology, and our expert team can advise you on the very latest in variable-speed drive developments.

As an Authorized Value Provider, we’re approved by ABB to offer technical support and advice for their variable-speed drives, so you can be confident you’re dealing with the experts when you contact us.
