How to maintain staff productivity during a heatwave

With temperatures across the UK soaring, staff in offices, workshops and warehouses alike fall into one of two categories – those enjoying the benefits of air conditioning and those sweating it out.

Workplace comfort has a significant effect on the productivity of staff. Regulating indoor air temperature mechanically means employees find it easier to concentrate while avoiding the ingress of external pollutants that occurs when windows are opened.

Meanwhile, workers based in hot, humid conditions will be uncomfortable, tire more easily and find it difficult to focus. This directly affects productivity, which in turn impacts on profits.

In addition, uncomfortable staff may also become unhappy staff, particularly those working in physically demanding roles. In the longer term, this can lead to a higher employee turnover rate, which increases recruitment and training costs and ultimately results in an unsettled and inconsistent workforce.
