What is sick building syndrome?

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a health condition affecting people who spend extended periods of time in certain environments. SBS is normally associated with workplaces, with a US survey of office staff finding that almost a quarter of those questioned reported poor air quality at work while 20 per cent felt it had a negative impact on their effectiveness.

Symptoms of SBS include:

  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Aches and pains
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Skin irritation
  • Eye and throat soreness
  • Difficulty in concentrating

SBS symptoms may vary between individuals and normally improve upon leaving the building. SBS occurs more commonly in women, but it is thought that this is because a greater number of females work in offices, rather than being more prone to the condition.

SBS has been attributed to mechanical ventilation and regular use of display screen equipment, with symptoms reported in other occupied spaces such as schools, libraries, museums.

Researchers have identified the following risk factors for SBS that are related to mechanical air handling systems:

  • Low humidity
  • Fluctuating temperature
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Airborne particles and chemical pollutants

Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions helps owners and managers of shared spaces such as offices, schools and hospitals to protect occupants from the risk of SBS. We achieve this with the installation of innovative ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) products, which apply the disinfecting power of ultraviolet-C (UVC) light to air and surfaces which may harbour harmful bacteria, germs and viruses.

With multiple solutions supplied in partnership with BioZone Scientific International, Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions helps protect the health and wellbeing of building occupants while increasing air handling unit (AHU) efficiency and extending its operational life.

Here’s a quick look at these groundbreaking systems:

Removes over 99 per cent of microbial contaminants growing on air handling unit surfaces and is easily mounted into new and existing HVAC systems.

Fully automated and chemical free, InDuct destroys odours, smoke and chemicals in the air and in AHUs and ductwork.

Designed specifically for hygiene and odour control within workplace toilet facilities, AirCare® kills germs in the air and on surfaces while removing unpleasant smells at source, rather than simply masking them.

Low maintenance and suitable for use as a portable solution or fixed installation, PR can reduce airborne bacteria by over 70 per cent.
