BESA calls for healthy HVAC systems in UK offices

In yesterday’s blog, we looked at an indoor air quality (IAQ) survey of Edinburgh office staff, the majority of whom were worried that air pollution is having a detrimental impact on their ability to function at work.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has now called for action to protect the health, wellbeing and productivity of UK office staff. The Association found in its research that more than two-thirds of UK office workers experienced fatigue at work on at least a monthly basis, while 54 per cent of respondents said that their productivity at work dropped a minimum of once per month.

BESA has used the survey as evidence that properly-performing and well-maintained HVAC systems are essential for improving IAQ in office spaces, calling upon building managers to carry out installations or upgrades that will make a real difference.

HVAC systems, if not properly maintained, can harbour contaminants such as bacteria, mould, germs and viruses, which are transferred to building occupants via the air stream. Increasing reliance on mechanical heating and cooling has led to a rising incidence of sick building syndrome and other workplace-related health problems.

An innovative solution to the workplace IAQ issue exists in the form of ultraviolet-C light technology. UVC light is extremely effective at cleaning and disinfecting air and surfaces, while continued use prevents the re-growth of harmful contaminants.

Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions, in association with BioZone Scientific International, has developed a range of chemical-free systems that apply UVC light to the surfaces and air stream within air handling units (AHUs).

These proprietary systems include Gibbons’ flagship CoilCare® equipment, which destroys contaminants at both the cooling coil and within ductwork.

CoilCare® is quick and easy to install, requires minimal maintenance and can yield energy savings of as much as 25 per cent due to improved AHU performance. Meanwhile, return on investment is achieved within 24 months on average.
