The tiny change that could offset a building’s energy costs

Increasing employee productivity by just one per cent could offset a building’s total energy costs, according to consulting firm WSP Canada.

The statistic formed part of a Sourceable article (‘Design Elements Directly Impact Human Health’ – August 2016) which looked at the WELL Building Standard and how the design and construction of buildings affects the health and wellbeing of occupants.

The WELL Building Standard was introduced by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) in October 2014 and is a performance-based system that measures, certifies and monitors air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind  - seven factors of the built environment that affect human health and wellbeing. The standard covers everything from air filtration to hand washing.

Achieving and retaining WELL Building Standard certification is simpler and more cost effective if solutions such as air-handling disinfection systems are included during the initial design stage. Equipment can then be integrated during construction rather than added later at greater cost and inconvenience.

Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions, in association with BioZone Scientific International, works with building owners, facilities managers and architects to integrate state-of-the-art ultraviolet-C (UVC) light disinfection systems in buildings such as hospitals, offices and schools.

CoilCare® is an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) system that uses UVC light to destroy 99% of contaminants from the cooling coil surface within an air handling unit (AHU). The equipment can be fitted to new and existing installations, offering a permanent solution that removes contaminants and prevents future build-up.

The resulting improvement in indoor air quality can have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of staff. This can in turn achieve that crucial upturn in productivity and make all the difference to a company’s bottom line.
