What is direct online (DOL) electric motor starting?

Direct online (DOL) starting – also known as across the line starting – is a common method for activating an electric motor.

A DOL starter connects the motor directly to three-phase (mains) power, which provides immediate full-line voltage and briefly causes the motor to draw a very high inrush current. For this reason, DOL starters tend to only be used on smaller motors, typically up to 7.5 kW.

Sudden high acceleration can cause premature wear to components such as shafts and couplings, meaning DOL starting is not suitable for all applications but is often used for water pumps, fans, conveyor belts and compressors.
