A WELL-rated environment improves health of 92% of workers

More than nine in 10 people working in a WELL Building Standard-rated space reported that their health and wellbeing improved as a result, according to a survey of CBRE employees.

CBRE’s Los Angeles headquarters hosted the first WELL-certified pilot scheme, and 92 per cent of its workers felt the space had a positive impact on their health and wellbeing, while 83 per cent said they felt more productive.

WELL was launched by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) as a performance-based scheme to measure, certify and monitor elements of the built environment that affect human health and wellbeing. The standard covers all aspects of buildings and occupants, from air filtration to hand washing and ultimately aims to have occupant health and wellbeing become an integral part of building design.

For accreditation to be earned, WELL-authorised assessors are dispatched to carry out inspection and testing of factors such as sound and light levels and air and water quality. Re-assessment is required every three years.

With the issue of indoor air quality (IAQ) gaining exposure, there are innovative IAQ solutions for project and facilities managers to consider including during building design and construction.

One such product is CoilCare®, an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) system from Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions in association with BioZone Scientific International.

CoilCare® is a chemical-free HVAC disinfection system that destroys 99% of germs, bacteria and viruses from the cooling coil surface within an air handling unit (AHU). The equipment can be fitted to new and existing installations, providing a long-term solution that also prevents future build-up, resulting in vastly improved IAQ.

By enhancing the health and wellbeing of staff, higher-quality IAQ also boosts productivity while lowering the risk of sickness-related absenteeism.
