Winter is coming: will your HVAC frost coils stand the cold?

With less than two weeks until the clocks go back, winter is well and truly on its way. Before the cold weather arrives, building and facilities managers should set about preparing their HVAC frost coils for the challenges winter brings.

What are frost coils?

Frost coils protect downstream coils within an air handling unit (AHU) from freezing by absorbing heat. However, coils are prone to bursting during the winter which leads to expense for building managers and inconvenience for occupants.

Why do AHU frost coils fail?

Frost coils usually fail because of inadequate antifreeze levels or age-related corrosion. Whatever the cause, burst frost coils are expensive and messy - but most of all, avoidable. By having frost coils examined as part of regular maintenance, potential problems can be identified and repairs and upgrades can be carried out before failure occurs.

Gibbons HVAC Services inspects, maintains and replaces frost coils to help facilities managers ensure AHU reliability and occupant comfort and wellbeing throughout the winter months. We have vast experience working with all makes and models of HVAC equipment and our engineers will attend site outside normal working hours to minimise disruption to your day-to-day operations.
