CIBSE conference focuses on indoor air quality

A Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) conference held at Westminster’s QEII Conference Centre last week saw more than 500 speakers, visitors and exhibitors hear presentations on building performance, particularly the increasingly hot topic of indoor air quality.

The themes presented by in excess of 40 respected industry speakers included:

  • External air pollution in homes and offices and how to reduce its effects
  • The impact of IAQ in homes and schools
  • WELL Building Standard
  • Retrofitting to improve energy efficiency and occupant wellbeing

John Field, president of CIBSE, highlighted the importance of IAQ within occupied spaces by stating that improvements are “making the earth a better place and even saving lives.” He also talked about the industry’s use of innovation to solve the IAQ problem, which is especially challenging in the UK due to the number of buildings that are over 100 years old and not designed to accommodate the required technology.

Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions is a pioneer of IAQ innovation, with our ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems for occupied spaces.

Our innovation solutions include CoilCare®, a low-maintenance system which applies ultraviolet C (UVC) light to the cooling coil of an air handling unit. This eradicates ‘biofilm’ – a potentially harmful substance which forms from the build-up of contaminants such as bacteria, mould and dirt.

The image to the right provides a visual demonstration of the power of CoilCare®, showing petri dish samples taken from the same air handling unit surface, before and after the installation of the system.

It also highlights the fact that heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems not routinely serviced may be transferring biofilm to rooms via the airstream, increasing the likelihood of illness, reduced productivity and absenteeism among building occupants.

CoilCare® is tailored to each installation, meaning it is easily fitted within new and existing HVAC systems, while energy savings of up to 25 per cent can help users realise an average payback of 24 months.
