EU on course to reach 2020 climate change targets

Two new reports from the European Environment Agency (EEA) have revealed that carbon emissions across the European Union last year were 22 per cent lower than 1990 levels, confirming that the EU is on track to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2020.

The EEA reports (‘Trends and Projections in Europe 2016: Tracking progress towards Europe climate and energy targets’ and ‘Approximated EU greenhouse gas inventory: Proxy GHG emission estimates for 2015’) show the EU to be comfortably achieving its 2020 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent compared to 1990 levels. In light of this, more challenging long-term goals are planned for 2030 and 2050.

The impressive figures are in part due to the implementation of energy-saving equipment in industrial processes, particularly high-efficiency electric motors and variable-speed drives.

Roughly two-thirds of all electricity consumed in global industrial processes is used for running electric motors that drive pumps, fans, conveyors and other machinery. Upgrading motors to high-efficiency IE3 or IE4 models can help to significantly reduce energy costs while satisfying the latest EU MEPS legislation.

In addition, connecting variable-speed drives to electric motor-driven applications may achieve savings of as much as 60 per cent, as motor speed is optimised to suit the demands of the process at any given time.

Gibbons Engineering Group is a leading supplier of energy-efficient electric motors along with variable-speed drives from industry leaders ABB, which allows us to provide packaged solutions to help users maximise efficiency and reduce wear and tear on equipment.

We’re also a founder member of the authorised value provider network for ABB drives, giving us exclusive access to a worldwide network of products, services and technical expertise.
