Could Brexit actually help UK manufacturers?

It’s almost six months since the British public voted to leave the European Union, and during that time there has been widespread concern over the effect Brexit will have on the UK manufacturing sector.

However, with the cost of importing goods from overseas set to rise, some small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are viewing Brexit as an opportunity rather than a threat. They believe that increased import prices will encourage buyers to use UK manufacturers, providing a welcome boost to businesses such as food and beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical producers.

British manufacturers can also boost their prospects by upgrading equipment for energy-efficiency gains. Electric motor-driven processes such as mixers and conveyors account for around two thirds of industrial energy consumption, so by installing the latest IE3 and IE4 motors, producers can enjoy long-term savings.

In addition, variable-speed drives can optimise processes by regulating electric motor speed depending on the changing demands of the application. This ensures energy is not wasted as it would be if a traditional speed control method such as throttling was used.

Gibbons Engineering Group supplies both electric motors and variable-speed drives to the manufacturing sector, providing packaged solutions for long-term energy savings.

Our newest offering is a stainless steel motor and ABB variable-speed drive combination that’s ideal for the demanding food and beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

The stainless-steel motors have no paint to peel, chip or flake off and no rating plate for bacteria to hide behind. In addition, they’re rated at IP69K ingress protection, meaning they’re dust tight and resistant to high-pressure water jets used during washdown.

The ABB ACS355 drives are also protected against the ingress of dust, debris and water and feature a keypad membrane cover for easy operation.
