Looking back on 2016

As 2016 draws to a close, we thought we’d take the chance to look back at the highlights of what’s been another busy, exciting year here at Gibbons.

New products and services

This year has saw us introduce an invaluable solution for the food and beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries – a stainless steel motor and ABB drive package specially designed to withstand high-pressure water jets used during washdowns.

Meanwhile, our Drive Hire division was launched in April, offering clients an emergency option in the event of variable-speed drive failure. Pre-programmed and ready-cabled for immediate installation and commissioning by a Gibbons engineer, these ABB drives are available 24 hours a day.

We added an eleventh division to the company this year, as HVAC Industrial Fans bolstered our comprehensive product offering. The division offers high-quality centrifugal fans to the industrial, commercial and leisure sectors, with clients including blacksmiths, farms and soft-play centres.

Big projects

We helped London’s All England Club prepare for the Wimbledon Championships in June, providing HVAC services for key areas of the site to ensure the comfort of thousands of tennis fans, broadcasters and journalists.

An enormous 1.72 x 2.62-metre, 773 kilogram humidifier compartment (right) dominated our workshop in the summer as it was prepared for installation at a European print production showroom.

September saw our Ultraviolet Solutions division carry out a CoilCare HVAC disinfection system installation in a large shopping mall in Dubai, with our man Alex Forrest taking in the sights before he left (see right).

During the autumn we sent a team to Central London to install a complete HVAC system for one of the country’s leading IVF clinics, a job requiring all our expertise as it demanded the tightest possible tolerances.

Offering a helping hand

In January we donated a number of scrap gearboxes to Colchester Institute’s Engineer Training Centre – where many of our engineers have gained their qualifications – to allow trainees to develop their maintenance skills.

In May we welcomed Anglian Water apprentice Sam Walls to visit our workshop for two days and gain valuable experience from our team of expert engineers. Sam was the latest in a long line of AW apprentices we’ve hosted as part of our excellent relationship with the company.

A Gibbons team hit the greens at Brocket Hall Golf Club in Welwyn, Hertfordshire in September in aid of Together for Short Lives, a children’s charity supporting young Britons who are not expected to reach adulthood. It was the second consecutive year we’d been present at the event, represented by HVAC Services manager Andrew Knight.

Fresh faces

We’ve welcomed a number of new recruits to all areas of the business this year as workload increased. Beginning their Gibbons careers in 2016 were:

  • Steven Burmby – sales
  • Alex Forrest – on-site engineering
  • Terry Wood – on-site engineering
  • Vicky Keith – business operations
  • Chris Tann – on-site engineering
  • Mayo Parkin – on-site engineering
  • Ben Frost – motor rewinds and repairs

Fond farewells

Some of our longest-serving staff left the company this year to explore pastures new. Paul Scott left the company after more than a decade, the majority of which was spent in a sales role. During the summer, Claire Scott, Business Administration Manager, moved on after a 13-year career with us. Finally, in the summer we bade farewell to Marketing Assistant Charli May, who had worked for Gibbons for three years.

And finally…

We couldn’t finish without mentioning the day in June when staff arrived to a half-flooded car park, with water levels rising dangerously close to the building’s front door.

Floodwater on an adjacent field had cascaded into our car park, overwhelming drains and providing a lake for a flock of black-headed seagulls to enjoy!

With the rain continuing to pour, we took two high-performance submersible pumps from stock and extended the pipework to reach a raised road, allowing us to safely pump the water away in no time.

It’s been quite a year, and the Gibbons team are already working hard to ensure 2017 is our best yet. So be sure to keep an eye on our blog for all the latest goings-on at Gibbons!
