9,400 deaths a year in London linked to air pollution

As many as 9,400 premature deaths each year in London have been attributed to air pollution, with Mayor Sadiq Khan condemning the capital’s air as “toxic,” “filthy” and “shameful.”

A pollution spike on Sunday was the highest level recorded in London in almost six years and warnings are being issued to residents, commuters and tourists that they may need to take precautions in order to protect themselves.

It’s not only those walking the streets who should be concerned, though. The impact of outdoor air pollution on indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming increasingly well known, as so-called ‘fresh’ air introduced to buildings via windows and other ventilation can contain high levels of pollutants.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, even with filtration, cannot always prevent outdoor pollutants from entering occupied spaces. That’s why Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions helps building owners and managers to protect building occupants with its range of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems for the disinfection of air and surfaces in occupied spaces such as offices, schools, restaurants and healthcare facilities.

One of our innovative systems is CoilCare®, a permanent, low-maintenance unit containing photoniser lamps which is mounted within the air handling unit (AHU) of a HVAC system and applies ultraviolet-C (UVC) light to the cooling coil. By eradicating contaminants on and around the cooling coil, the air circulated is clean, healthy and safe for occupants to breathe.

CoilCare® is suitable for installation in schools, healthcare facilities, care homes, restaurants and offices and with continued use can prevent the re-growth of contaminants.
