Untapped potential: 50% of electric motors could use VSDs

Did you know that as many as half of all electric motors installed could benefit from the addition of variable-speed drives? In fact, only 25 per cent of electric motors are connected to VSDs, and of the rest only around a quarter are unsuitable for variable-speed control.

This leaves up to 50 per cent of electric motors in industries such as automotive, food and beverage, textiles and pharmaceuticals running processes inefficiently as outdated speed control methods such as throttling are used.

Variable-speed drives are capable of reducing energy consumption in motor-driven applications by as much as 60 per cent, helping users to lower their running costs and remain competitive as energy costs continue to rise.

VSDs may offer a return on investment within a matter of months, providing a long-term energy-efficiency solution that also reduces wear and tear on the electric motor and driven equipment and helps to extend lifespan.

Gibbons Engineering Group, as well as being a long-time supplier of high-efficiency electric motors, is an authorised value provider for ABB drives. This prestigious status enables us to supply, install, commission and service ABB drives while offering expert technical support.
