How UVC technology could help the UK Green Building Council improve IAQ

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is marking its tenth anniversary with the launch of its ‘Ambitions for 2027’ – part of a vision to help Britain achieve its commitment to reduce carbon emissions by a minimum of 80% against 1990 levels by 2050.

The UKGBC’s vision for a sustainable built environment includes the health and wellbeing of people. As well as good-quality housing and access to green spaces, the UKGBC recognises the importance of indoor air quality – unsurprising considering that those in developed countries spend 90% of their time indoors.

The UKGBC’s report states that particulate air pollution reduces the life expectancy of Britons by six months, at a cost of around £16 billion per year. And with mechanical ventilation systems being used in an increasing number of new and existing schools, offices, hospitals and other occupied spaces, outdoor pollutants from vehicles and industrial processes may be quickly transferred to indoor areas.

Even with filtration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems may not always prevent outdoor pollutants from entering occupied spaces. That’s where Gibbons Ultraviolet Solutions comes in.

We’re helping building owners and facilities managers to protect building occupants with our range of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems for the disinfection of air and surfaces in buildings such as offices, schools, restaurants and healthcare facilities.

Our flagship system, CoilCare®, a permanent, low-maintenance unit containing photoniser lamps which is mounted within the air handling unit (AHU) of a HVAC system and applies ultraviolet-C (UVC) light to the cooling coil. By eradicating contaminants on and around the cooling coil surface, circulated air becomes clean, healthy and safe for occupants to breathe.

CoilCare® is chemical free and suitable for installation in schools, healthcare facilities, care homes, restaurants and offices and with continued use can prevent the re-growth of contaminants.
