Sugar quotas are history - now producers can enjoy a sweet future

In 2013, EU countries and the EU parliament agreed to end the sugar quota system – a measure which was implemented on 30th September 2017.

For sugar producers, the end of the quota system spells a new era of unrestricted production and increased profitability, and while that’s great news it also means that they will face rising expectations and demands from consumers.

Having been limited on what they can produce for so long, a large number of manufacturers are currently using machinery designed to cope with a certain level of production. Now that the quotas have been lifted, their equipment needs to be capable of running longer, more efficiently and with greater reliability.

The capacity of machines such as conveyors, shredders and mixers may need to be improved by upgrading power and control equipment including electric motors, gearboxes and variable-speed drives.

Gibbons Engineering Group has extensive experience in the UK sugar production sector, having delivered countless projects for some of the industry’s biggest names.
