Anglian Water apprentice

At Gibbons Engineering Group, we’re always keen to share our knowledge with people who want to learn, especially helping apprentices who want to progress their careers in engineering. Over the past 50 years, we have always promoted from within, employing young, future engineers as apprentices with a view to them gaining vital experience and becoming talented electrical engineers. Not only do we train and develop our own engineers, but we also welcome trainees from some of our customer base.

In February, we opened the door to an Anglian Water apprentice named Josh who was keen to gain vital experience both on-site and within one of our workshops. Josh had contacted us before the end of 2023 and arranged a two-week placement with the Gibbons management team.

During his two-week placement, Josh shadowed one of our electrical engineers across multiple Anglian Water sites in Great Totham and Canvey Island.  Whilst on-site, Josh was on hand to learn about what’s involved when replacing variable-speed drives and how they are programmed to help control the speed of motors and pumps.

During the second week of his time at Gibbons’, Josh worked in our Rewinds and Repairs workshop alongside our engineers, Kev and Dave. Josh was tasked with taking apart electric motors and assessing them for any damage and subsequent repairs. It’s an important part of the rewinds process as it gives our professionals access to the inner workings of the failed equipment. Working amongst the motors, pumps and gearboxes that are brought in for repairs allows apprentices to learn about how the machinery works and the importance of keeping them running correctly.

Managing Director Matthew Gibbons had this to say about AW apprentice, Josh. “From the very first minute that Josh arrived at Gibbons for his placement, we could tell that his attitude and commitment to working practices was in the right place”. We were confident that he would learn a lot out on-site with our engineers and when he was working in our workshops, he showed us that he was extremely bright and switched on. We foresee a very positive future for Josh at Anglian Water.”

We’re always on the lookout for talented future engineers so if you’re interested in a career in electrical engineering, contact us on 01621 868 138 or email
