Case Study: Maintenance and Repairs at a Supermarket HQ2024-12-10T09:50:45+00:00

Project Description

Overview

Gibbons Engineering Group was called upon to address multiple maintenance and repairs at a supermarket headquarters in London, UK. These included bearing replacements on a cooling tower fan, investigating a noisy sewage pump, and assessing an atrium fan on the roof for potential repairs.

Challenges and Solutions

  1. Cooling Tower Maintenance (3B Cooling Tower):

Objective: Replace worn bearings on the centrifugal fan.

Process:

  • Isolated the motor for safety and removed guards, belts, and pulleys.
  • Old bearings were removed using a cutting method, and shafts were cleaned before installing new bearings.
  • Ensured the impeller and inlet cone alignment to avoid rubbing.
  • Reassembled and tested the fan, which operated smoothly without issues.

Outcome: The cooling tower fan was left in full working order and set to automatic, with reset instructions provided for the building management system (BMS).

  1. Atrium Fan Assessment:

Objective: Investigate the roof-mounted atrium fan for potential repairs.

Process:

  • Isolated and disconnected the fan.
  • Advised client to await a repair quote before removing the fan.

Outcome: The fan remains on-site, pending a repair decision.

  1. Sewage Pump Troubleshooting:

Objective: Diagnose and resolve noise issues.

Process:

  • Identified loose valve handles as the cause of harsh start-up noises.
  • Tightened handles and tested the pump with the on-site engineer.

Outcome: The noise issue was resolved, and the pump was confirmed to be in good working order.

Conclusion – Maintenance and Repairs at a Supermarket

Bearings on the 3B cooling tower fan were successfully replaced, restoring smooth operation. The atrium fan requires further action, pending repair approval. The sewage pump’s noise issue was resolved through simple adjustments.

Client Feedback

The on-site engineer was satisfied with the professionalism and thoroughness of the work.
