Project Description
Client: Anglian Water
Location: North Ockenden, Essex
Project Overview
At Anglian Water’s North Ockenden site, a roadside kiosk housing vital control equipment for a sewage pit required complete replacement after more than four decades of service. The original kiosk, exposed to the elements for over 40 years, had deteriorated significantly due to wind, rain, and general wear. It housed control boxes for level control in a large sewage well, with two submersible pumps connected via float switches.
The Challenge
Replacing the kiosk was not a straightforward swap. The structure contained the incoming power feed from UK Power Networks along with a meter, meaning strict coordination was essential to safely disconnect and reinstate power.
The main challenges included:
- Power Management: Liaising with UK Power Networks to arrange power isolation and reconnection.
- Sewage Management: With the power off, pumps were inoperable, so Anglian Water provided a tanker with pumping facilities to manage the sewage build-up.
- Complex Cabling: All control connection boxes and cabling from the old kiosk had to be carefully removed and reinstalled, including the replacement of the main isolator.
- Safety: Traffic management measures, provided by an external contractor, were essential as the kiosk was located beside a road.
Our Solution
Our engineers safely removed the old, rotten kiosk, transferring all control and power connections to the new unit. The new kiosk was installed adjacent to a newer existing kiosk, through which many of the site’s connections already ran.
The Result
The new kiosk provides a secure, weatherproof housing for critical power and control infrastructure, ensuring continued reliable operation of the sewage pumps and level control system. The project was completed safely, with minimal disruption to site operations and the surrounding area.
