Sprites Hall water treatment works
At Sprites Hall Water Booster, Gibbons Engineering initially installed variable speed drives (VSDs) back in 2001. After 23 years of reliable service, Gibbons’ engineers were recently called back to replace one of these drives. The original unit, an ABB ACS601, was upgraded to an ABB ACQ580 water drive.
This replacement aligns with the original project’s goal of transitioning pump control from level-based—where the pumps filled a water tower—to direct pressure control. Now, the pumps maintain a constant pressure directly in the water main, eliminating the need for the water tower, which is now permanently out of service. Remarkably, out of the six variable-speed drives installed in 2001, only two have required replacement, demonstrating their impressive durability.
