Project Description

Overview

Gibbons Engineering Group was tasked with upgrading the existing motor control system for a client by replacing two Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) with new ABB ACS880 500V units. The project also involved panel modifications, electrical testing, and full functional commissioning to ensure seamless integration and performance.

Scope of Works

  • Removed the top capacitor panel to allow access and installation.

  • Installed two new ABB ACS880 500V VSDs, offering improved energy efficiency, control, and reliability.

  • Modified the Pump 2 section of the panel to accommodate the new VSD layout and configuration.

  • Fitted a new amp meter to the panel door for enhanced monitoring and visibility.

  • Ran flexible conduit between the VSDs and the main panel, connecting all required power and control cables.

  • Conducted functional tests by running the pump in local mode to confirm correct rotational direction.

  • Switched to automatic operation, verifying start/stop functionality via the site’s existing level control system.

  • Checked all electrical signals to ensure correct communication between the VSDs and the control panel.

Outcome

The new drives were installed and commissioned successfully, with all signals and controls functioning as expected. The site was left clean and tidy, and the client now benefits from a more efficient and modern motor control setup.
